Keyboards Filthier Than Toilet Seats - Tej Kohli

  • Mood:
  • Music:
Tej Kohli was actually taken back to see this report on web. According to a British microbiologist, office computer keyboards could be filthier than toilet seats and cause serious diseases.

Read the entire report below on Tej Kohli Bravenet Blog:

Some computer keyboards harbour more harmful bacteria than a toilet seat, research has suggested.

Tests were conducted on 33 office keyboards and compared with swabs from a toilet seat and a door handle in a public toilet. It was found that the keyboards contained dangerous levels of killer bacteria such as E coli and S aureus. E coli causes diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever, while S aureus causes skin infections such as pimples, boils and abscesses.

Microbiologist Dr Peter Wilson said a keyboard was often "a reflection of what is in your nose and in your gut".

During the Which? tests in January this year, a microbiologist deemed one of the office's keyboards to be so dirty he ordered it to be removed, quarantined and cleaned.

It had 150 times the recommended limit for bacteria - five times as filthy as a lavatory seat tested at the same time, the research found.

The equipment was swabbed for bugs, such as those that can cause food poisoning like E.coli and staphylococcus aureus.

Dr Wilson, a consultant microbiologist at University College London Hospital, told BBC Radio 5 Live sharing a keyboard could be passing on illnesses among office workers.

"If you look at what grows on computer keyboards, and hospitals are worse, believe it or not, it's more or less a reflection of what's in your nose and in your gut," he said.

"Should somebody have a cold in your office, or even have gastroenteritis, you're very likely to pick it up from a keyboard."

Which? said one of the causes of dirty keyboards was users eating lunch at their desk, with crumbs encouraging the growth of bacteria.

Poor personal hygiene, such as not washing hands after going to the toilet, could also be to blame, it said.

Tej kohli - China to adjust Olympic torch relay in quake-hit areas

  • Mood: :(, Mournful
The recent report on Tej Kohli Blog
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) declared that relay route of the Olympic torch now in China will be adjusted due to the devastating May 12 earthquake in southwestern province of Sichuan.

Prior to earthquake, the relay in the Sichuan was scheduled between June 15 and June 18. Now it has been postponed to Aug 3 and Aug 5 before the torch is taken to Beijing.

The relay was suspended during the three days of national mourning May 19-21 for the victims of the earthquake.
This 8.0-magnitude earthquake has claimed more than 41,000 lives, according to the government estimate.

The BOCOG said in a statement on its website that "the relay will be closely related with the disaster relief work".

A minute's silence will be observed before the relay starts at every leg to mourn the victims. Donation boxes will be placed along the relay route.

Chinese netizens have proposed that surviving children of the earthquake light the Olympic cauldron.

The BOCOG officials said they have yet to decide on who will light the flame at the opening ceremony or whether to mourn the quake dead on the occasion.

Tej Kohli defining Viral Marketing

  • Mood:
Viral marketing is a technique that uses word of mouth or email to reach and affect an audience. Some forms of viral marketing have existed for centuries. They are mentioned in annals of Greek Athenian histories and are a common strategy in marketing and media relations techniques.

The goal of a viral marketer is to create "buzz" about a product or idea, so that the idea spreads widely. If effective, viral marketing may require very little effort on the part of the propagandist, as the recipients of the message become the primary agents who spread it to other people. On the other hand, the weakest thing about this form of marketing is that it is hard to control. Like the "telephone game" that children play, the message may change as it passes from ear to ear.

Examples of Virals:

    * Rumours
    * Chain letters with warnings
    * "Leaked" information
    * Gossip
    * Urban myths
    * Secondhand versions of official reports

Tej Kohli on Trojan-Infected MP3s

  • Mood:
A new type of Trojan horse malware application is hiding inside fake MP3 media files, infecting approximately 500,000 consumer PCs, McAfee Avert Labs reported. The nefarious files have been delivered primarily on peer-to-peer networks during the last several days. The trojan, known as "Downloader-UA.h," was added to McAfee's DAT files about a week ago. Since then, McAfee VirusScan Online users have reported the half-million detections. The trojan hides in fake music and video files and is associated with fastmp3player.com. "When a user attempts to load one of these MP3 and MPG files, they don't get the music/video they were hoping for; instead, they're directed to download a file named 'PLAY_MP3.exe,'" reports Craig Schmugar, a researcher for McAfee Avert Labs, on the Avert Labs blog. "In fact, the MP3/MPG file they downloaded was completely fake, playing no media clip whatsoever." Infected users receive an offer that purportedly will let them listen to free MP3s. They must agree to an End User License Agreement (EULA), which installs an ad-supported application. "In the end you're left with a fake MP3 file taking up space, a worthless MP3 player, adware that claims not only to not display popups, but also to block them, and more adware that successfully displays popup and popunder ads," Schmugar reports. Thus far, operators of just 10 percent of the 500,000-plus systems with the trojan on their PCs have gone so far as to agree to the EULA and download the adware installer.

Mobile banking lures leading banks globally

A third of the world’s largest financial organizations are planning to launch mobile banking services in the next 12 to 24 months, says a Sybase survey.

Nearly a third of the world's largest financial organizations are planning to launch mobile banking services in the next 12 to 24 months, according to a recent survey commissioned by Sybase 365, a subsidiary of Sybase Inc.

The survey found that 66 per cent of banks consider mobile banking as an excellent opportunity to enhance existing customer service.

Independent research company Loudhouse conducted the survey for Sybase.

The survey took into account the views of 92 of the world's top financial institutions that included 32 European banks and 30 each from the US and the Asia-Pacific region.

The growth is projected to be the strongest in the US with 53 per cent of banks expecting to launch mobile banking services in the next 24 months.

The provision of such services is considerably advanced in European and Asia-Pacific regions compared to the US.

"Key factors for financial institutions offering mobile banking are not solely commercial, such as reducing costs or generating revenue," said Matthew Talbot, vice president, mCommerce for Sybase 365.

The most common mobile banking services currently available to customers include balance on demand (offered by 87 per cent of banks with mobile banking services), transaction alerts (77 per cent), money transfers (74 per cent) and balance alerts (71 per cent).

The top reasons for doing so are to improve the customer experience (87 per cent), to extend Internet banking (81 per cent) and to achieve competitive advantage (71 percent), found the survey.

Yahoo under pressure for alternative to Microsoft - A Tej Kohli report

  • Mood:
Tej Kohli came across an interesting bit of news on internet.

Yahoo Inc faced growing pressure on Sunday to find an alternative strategy to Microsoft Corp's $47.5 billion takeover offer after the software maker walked away over a disagreement on price.

Yahoo shares could fall by more than 30 per cent on Monday over the breakdown of talks, but that drop could be softened if Wall Street believes Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang has another strategy up his sleeve, analysts said.

Yahoo is likely to push for an advertising partnership with web search leader Google Inc, sources familiar with the matter said.

A tie-up with Google, seen as a big winner from the end of
Microsoft-Yahoo talks, should help boost Yahoo's operating performance in the near term.

"It's time to get a move on with Google," said Jeffrey Lindsay, analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein. "Let's hope they weren't bluffing."

Yahoo is also still considering a deal with another Internet media and advertising major, such as Time Warner Inc's AOL, people familiar with the discussions said.

But Yang and the company he helped create could face a flood of shareholder lawsuits or other actions if nothing materializes.

"There are two things that could support the stock: the potential for Microsoft to return and the potential to do a Google deal," said Clayton Moran, analyst at Stanford Group.

Moran said Yahoo shares could fall to the mid- to low-$20 range on Monday from their $28.67 close last week. Other analysts said it could slip closer to $19.18, where it closed on January 31, a day before Microsoft made its offer public.

Microsoft shares are likely to rise on Monday, with its investors relieved that Chief Executive Steve Ballmer didn't shell out billions more for Yahoo, analysts said.

Microsoft on Saturday sweetened its initial $31-per-share offer for Yahoo to $33, but then withdrew from the talks when Yang dug in for a price of $37.

Google CEO Talks on Google as a Company

  • Mood:

Ever wondered how good it would be to be able to get everything that you want on the net easily. Personalization and customization has become an ever more important part of search, as a means to deliver more accurate results to users, Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, said Tuesday.

Google plans to leave well enough alone when it comes to changing its interface, Schmidt said. However, he noted the company has no qualms in bolstering the way its search technology works.

The notion that products and technology don't matter when a company is young is a fallacy, and not just an issue for older, established companies, said Schmidt, who has also previously served as chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems.

Nurturing passion is another key area when building a start-up, Schmidt said.

"It's human nature people want to do something that will matter and change the world," Schmidt said. "And it's these companies that will be built on passion."

Google has a very rigorous hiring system put into place to draw in people with these sorts of traits, from passion to a perspective of limitless boundaries.

Prospective Google employees are subjected to a peer review, which at times is tougher than the interview with executives and managers, Schmidt said. And job candidates who manage to pass the first hurdle are then interviewed by a second committee.

"A merciless hiring process in the first 60 days (of a company's life) is important," Moritz said. "That's why Google has been able to do more with fewer people than some larger companies."

Schmidt said he too went through a rigorous interviewing process with Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

The seasoned tech executive spent several hours arguing over such issues as the structure of the Internet to going over a long list of questions that centered on everything from management structure to how the company does its accounting.

"I asked about all the things that tend to get left behind when you're running a company as fast as you can," Schmidt said.

The founders and Moritz were seeking a seasoned executive to not only grow the company, but also one with an amicable personality.

"We wanted someone who would flourish and thrive alongside the founders," Moritz said.

Schmidt said the role of Google's management team is to build a great, enduring company around the founders' vision. When he decided to join the company, Schmidt said he was looking to reset his views on the direction technology was headed and felt Google had a successful founding team.
